Shared mobility

Shared mobility is the future of mobility

Shared mobility means using means of transport shared by several people. There are two main categories of system:

Vehicle sharing - Several people use the same vehicle individually at different times (car, bike, scooter, etc.). In this case, shared vehicles must be returned to a specific point after the journey (station-based) or parked in a specific area (free-floating).

Journey sharing - Several people use the same vehicle together at the same time. This type of shared mobility obviously includes public transport, but also carpooling, taxis and other solutions.

More and more solutions are being proposed to facilitate Multimodality, i.e. the combined use of several means of transport for a single or several journeys (bike and tram, for example), sometimes via a single application.

This new way of thinking about mobility through mixed solutions is the basis of the "Mobility as a Service" (MaaS) concept, which encourages a shift from mobility based on the ownership of modes of transport to mobility based on the use of mobility services and solutions.

The many benefits of shared mobility

Shared mobility offers many advantages compared to the private car (very often with only one person on board):

  • speed (especially at peak traffic times).
  • no worries about parking (often complicated and expensive).
  • availability (there is always a vehicle available).
  • relieve congestion in the city (more beautiful, safer and more pleasant).
  • reduced ecological impact (fewer cars means less pollution).
  • improved air quality, which benefits everyone.
  • financial savings that can quickly add up, especially with rising fuel prices.
  • reduced stress, and that feels really good.
  • increased physical activity, especially cycling and walking.

Understanding Multimodality and Mobility as a Service

The key idea behind multimodality is to be able to combine several means of transport to reach your destination (with the emphasis, of course, on shared mobility). I arrive at Etterbeek station by train, jump on the tram and then get off, taking a shared bike to reach my destination. That's multimodality.

And what is Mobility as a Service (MaaS)?

Multimodality is great, of course. But in practical terms, it is not always obvious to the user.

  • How can I calculate my journey time using these different means of transport?
  • How can I be sure that a shared bike will be available when I get off the tram?
  • How do I pay for all these solutions in a single payment?

If these questions remain unanswered, multimodality can seem like a juxtaposition of solutions that are not necessarily integrated with one another.

That's what Mobility as a Service (MaaS) is all about, i.e. offering services that will:

  • unify the transport offer digitally and physically in terms of information, reservations and fares, to facilitate mobility and multimodality.
  • increase the quality, understanding and accessibility of public transport networks and services.
  • strengthen the interconnection between different services and intermodal travel by developing connection hubs.

Mobility as a Service (MaaS) is the integration of transport services into digital applications and platforms in the form of a single service, providing easy, practical access to all existing transport networks and new forms of mobility. As the ultimate tool for multimodality, MaaS offers integrated mobility solutions tailored to users and their travel needs.

FAQ

Here are a few questions and answers to make your life easier and ensure that multimodality is the right solution for you.

Is there a Brussels-based MaaS App available to all?

Not yet, but soon. Developed by the STIB, the Super-App for multimodality in Brussels should be available in autumn 2023. We will keep you posted.

Can I take my bike or scooter onto the tram, bus or metro?

It depends.  But as a general rule:
•    if your bike or scooter is foldable and collapsible, you can ride anywhere.
•    you can take your bike or scooter onto the metro, except during very busy hours (pedestrians have priority).
•    on high-floor buses and trams ("old" trams), you can only get on with a folding bike (folded) or a folding scooter (ditto).
•    on low-floor trams ("new" trams), you can take your bike (but no more than two bikes per train), but not during rush hour.

More information on this.

Where can I find a map of cycle paths in Brussels?

You will find some useful maps here but we recommend that you use the route planners described above, and in particular this one (the Route Planner from Bike for Brussels).

Do I have to pay for parking when I use a shared car in Brussels?

Actually, it depends. When it comes to dockless car-sharing (Poppy, Miles, etc. - see above), they are entitled to an exemption card, but this depends on the parking zone. For shared vehicles at stations (such as Cambio), parking is charged outside Cambio spaces.

How can I find out about car-sharing schemes near me?

The Apps and websites of each of these suppliers include access maps to their vehicles. And, very soon, you will have a single map of all these availabilities on the next STIB MaaS App.

What do I gain by giving up my private car?

A great idea! For details of the savings you will make, visit https://savewithcarsharing.be.

Are there any incentives to encourage people to give up their cars?

Absolutely! That is what the Bruxell'Air Incentive is for. All the information is here

How can I assess the financial benefits of switching to shared mobility?

The website https://savewithcarsharing.be is all about that!
